The DC-3 certainly did a lot for aviation during both war and peacetime. It is incredible to see how many were made and how long they were used for.

I'm pretty sure that you are right and that the 'Warbirds' DC-3 is painted up in RNZAF colours (which is what they were when handed to the NAC). I was fortunate a couple of years ago to see one in 'D-Day' colours flying at Warbirds over Wanaka flanked by P-51 Mustangs while the 'Band of Brothers' theme song blasted out of the loud-speakers. It would've been my highlight of the display, if not for the Japanese Zero!

That is an interesting picture - ANZAC's on watch while going through the Canal. If my memory serves me correct wasn't there a skirmish with the Turks somewhere along the canal before Gallipoli?

The ANZAC experience of Egypt is something that I find fascinating. Very much a shared experience between those who went to both world wars and they of course all sent home many many postcards, photos and souvenirs. As would anyone who had the fortune to visit Egypt! I'm quite keen to go there myself, not just for the ancient history but also to see some of the places mentioned by the Kiwi soldiers that went through there.

Fantastic photos. I still think the DC-3/C47 is the best aircraft ever built, period. Just so classic in so many ways - not least because they don't have an FAA fatigue life. Wonderful, wonderful piece of 1930s engineering. I saw the 'Warbirds' one under reconstruction at Hood Aerodrome in the late 1980s - it was being painted then in 'D-Day' colours, and I've seen it around in the air like that - but I think they've repainted it in RNZAF transport guise since.

This is a very cool piece of ephemera - and one that pretty much sums up the way many soldiers viewed their overseas venture, at least at first. Soldier-tourism. They learned - but the lure of exotic locations remained. We forget that Egypt was actually the bonus. They weren't meant to stop there, but when war broke out with Turkey, the ANZAC convoy was on the way and quickly diverted to bolster British forces in Egypt. When they got to the Suez Canal they feared attack and had riflemen stationed on deck - but nothing untoward happened. And so our first big overseas venture as New Zealanders began...
